Lagos Govt, Traditional Rulers Discuss Citing of Waste Recycling Plant In Ikosi

The Lagos State Government has intensified consultations with traditional rulers and community leaders in Owu-Ikosi and Agbowa-Ikosi over the proposed siting of a Material Recovery Facility, MRF, in the area.*

At a stakeholders’ meeting held in Alausa on Monday, officials emphasized the need to secure broad-based community acceptance and ownership before proceeding with implementation.

The meeting was convened to address outstanding concerns raised by residents and to ensure all stakeholders are carried along in the project delivery process.

Government officials described the proposed MRF as a major development initiative and not just a waste management facility. They said the project aligns with the State’s agenda to distribute critical infrastructure across all parts of Lagos.

“The State has a mandate to provide sustainable waste management infrastructure, but we are equally committed to ensuring that host communities understand, accept and ultimately take ownership of these projects,” a government representative stated.

The MRF is expected to strengthen waste recovery, recycling and resource utilisation, while reducing the volume of waste disposed of in landfills. It will also support Lagos’ broader environmental sustainability and circular economy goals.

Stakeholders present included the Olowu of Owu-Ikosi, Oba Nelson Ogunlari; the Abowa of Agbowa-Ikosi, Oba Saheed Owolabi Momson; Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Mr. Kamar Olowoshago; Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen; Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite; and Acting Surveyor-General of Lagos State, Surv. Olalekan Odupe.

Representatives from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, and the Lands Bureau were also in attendance.

The State Government said relevant agencies will continue to work collaboratively to ensure the successful delivery of the project.
