Lagos Police Launch Crackdown on Vehicles Lacking Clear Number Plates

The Lagos State Police Command has announced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorized, defaced, or missing registration number plates. The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance public safety and prevent criminal elements from masking their identities.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, stated on Sunday that the operation follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu. Scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, the exercise will be overseen by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, who has instructed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure strict enforcement within their jurisdictions.
Vehicles found in violation of the directive will be impounded and subjected to investigation according to established legal procedures.
The command emphasized that the enforcement is a proactive security strategy rather than an attempt to inconvenience law-abiding citizens. By ensuring all vehicles are clearly identifiable, authorities aim to improve the tracking of suspects and bolster the overall security infrastructure of the state.
Motorists, fleet owners, and transport operators are advised to ensure their vehicles display valid, clearly visible registration plates and that all vehicle documentation is up to date. The police also called on Lagos residents to cooperate with the initiative by reporting suspicious activities or vehicles through official emergency channels.
