Lagos Supports Mental Health for Gender-Based Violence Survivors

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has organized a mental health awareness programme for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

The event, held on Thursday at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Alausa, brought together survivors, professionals, and religious leaders to discuss support and recovery.

Commissioner Bolaji Dada emphasized that “emotional and psychological scars are often the most enduring” for survivors. She added that prioritizing mental wellbeing is essential for healing and reintegration.

Permanent Secretary Rianat Onigbanjo described the programme as impactful and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to improving access to mental health services for survivors.

Participants were informed on trauma management, coping strategies, and available counselling and support services in Lagos State. They were also encouraged to seek help without fear of stigma.

Onigbanjo thanked the survivors for their courage and assured them of the ministry’s continued support in their recovery and empowerment.
