LASTMA Rescues Trapped Driver After Container Truck Overturns in Ikorodu

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority successfully rescued a truck driver trapped in the cabin of his overturned vehicle along the Shagamu Road, near the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) in Ikorodu.

The incident occurred around midnight on Sunday when a fully loaded 40-foot container truck experienced brake failure and overturned. The agency detailed the rescue in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to the post, the driver was still trapped inside the cabin when authorities arrived. “It was a tense situation because the truck was fully loaded and the angle of the overturn made rescue challenging. Our team moved quickly to stabilise the vehicle and free the driver. Safety of motorists and the trapped driver was our top priority,” LASTMA stated.

The agency’s Rescue & Recovery Team mobilized a high-capacity recovery truck and worked for approximately an hour to extricate the driver, who was rescued alive.

The operation caused significant traffic disruption, partially blocking the main road. LASTMA officials diverted vehicles onto alternate routes and coordinated with traffic officers to manage the flow and maintain emergency access.

While the driver was safely recovered and the truck’s flatbed has been cleared, allowing two lanes to reopen, operations are ongoing. The agency is awaiting a crane to safely lift the container from the scene.

LASTMA has advised motorists using the Shagamu Road to follow posted diversions, cooperate with officials on-site, and exercise caution until recovery is complete.
