Legion Seeks Subsidised Farm Inputs for Military Veterans

Nigeria Troups

The Nigerian Legion has announced it is engaging the Ministry of Agriculture to secure subsidized farm inputs for military veterans who have taken up agriculture after service.

The move follows concerns raised by retirees during a medical outreach in Abuja, part of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day activities. Veterans highlighted that rising costs of fertilizer, chemicals, and equipment are threatening their farming livelihoods.

Retired Master Warrant Officer Emmanuel Waniko stated, “Farming is tough with these prices. Government should remember veteran farmers in their interventions.” Another retiree, Master Warrant Officer Magaji Abdallah, appealed for more agricultural support, especially for those in rural areas.

In response, National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Mrs Grace Henry, confirmed ongoing talks with the ministry. “We have applied for access to subsidized inputs and are hopeful for a positive outcome,” she said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, noted that while the outreach provided medical services and rice distribution, veteran welfare extends into areas such as agriculture.

The initiative aims to ease production costs and improve the livelihoods of veterans engaged in farming.
