Low-key Christmas For Nigerians As Prices Of Foodstuff Skyrocket

As Christians celebrate Christmas today the rise in the prices of foodstuffs and transportation have left Nigerians groaning making celebration difficult for an average person

In a short survey conducted by the Harmattan News on eve of Christmas day, it was lamentations all through as most women revealed that foodstuffs and chicken mostly used during yuletide were unaffordable.

At the Ogba retail market many customers were sighted moving from one axis of the market to the other wearing long faces.

A lady who identified herself as Chioma Ajibade told our correspondent that:”Look around you do you see anybody buying anything, we are just here for window shopping and nothing else.

“Look at my long list here, I have been here for well over 2hours and I have not been able to buy even a sachet of tomatoes paste everything as skyrocketed from what it use to be.

Another woman, Mrs Folashade odebunmi at Agege market spoke in the same vein declaring that”honestly I am fed up things can’t continue this way there’s nothing that is affordable.

“N20,000.00 is like N500 of 2015 because with just N500 then you can at least buy tomatoes and pepper then little oil to cook something without chicken and meat.

“How long will this continue because by January schools will resume we will now start thinking of how to pay school fees with empty stomachs.

At the popular Alhaji Store in Agege, customers were seen shopping their all wearing long faces due to the increase in the prices of day to day items.

A short survey of frozen food stores along the axis saw an influx of people obviously turning to frozen chicken and fish due to the price of Chicken.

It was gathered that a live chicken goes for between – N15,000- N30,000 depending on the size and breed while a kilo of frozen chicken sells for N3,800- N4,500 depending on location.

The seller have definitely created options for Nigerians to still be part of the Christmas celebration no matter how small.
