Low Voter Turnout Marks Kano Assembly By-Elections

Voter turnout remained low in several polling units across Kano Municipal Local Government Area during Saturday’s by-elections for the Kano State House of Assembly, despite the early arrival of electoral officials.

According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, many polling units recorded only a handful of voters by mid-morning, with officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission fully prepared and waiting at their stations.

In contrast to the slow participation, security personnel were visibly deployed in large numbers across the area. Armed officers were strategically positioned around polling centres to maintain order and ensure the safety of voters and electoral staff.

At the Kankarofi polling unit, voter Audu Musa described the process as peaceful and well-organised but expressed concern over the low attendance.

Alhaji Abdullahi Isa, another observer, commended the professionalism of security operatives while noting his surprise at the modest turnout.

Despite the early numbers, electoral officials expressed hope that voter participation might pick up later in the day. Stakeholders continue to call for a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process.
