Man Sentenced to Six Months for Unlawful Possession of Cannabis in Lagos

A 35-year-old man, Deji Adesanya, was convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on Tuesday for unlawfully dealing in cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana.
Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the sentence after Adesanya pleaded guilty to a one-count charge brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
The NDLEA prosecutor, Peter Ekuri, informed the court that Adesanya was arrested on November 22, 2025, at Safecourt Apartment in Ikate–Elegushi, Lagos, with five kilograms of the banned substance.
According to the prosecution, the offence contravened Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act and is punishable under the same law.
In her plea for leniency, the defence counsel, R.M.J. Nyiew, urged the court to consider the defendant’s early guilty plea, his expression of remorse, and his lack of prior convictions.
Justice Aluko, acknowledging the convict’s status as a first-time offender, sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment, with an option of a ₦450,000 fine.
