MAPOLY Students’ Union Orders Sit-at-Home Protest Over Tuition Hike

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, has directed all students to observe a peaceful sit-at-home action starting Monday, August 3, 2026, in response to a recent increase in school fees.

The directive comes after negotiations between student leaders and the institution’s management failed to resolve concerns over the new fee structure posted on the student portal.

In a joint statement led by SUG President Afolabi Temitope, the union emphasized that the current economic burden on students and parents makes the fee adjustment unfeasible. The leadership noted that while sustained efforts and multiple rounds of dialogue were held, student concerns regarding the financial strain remain completely unresolved.

As part of the demonstration, students have been instructed to stay away from campus and suspend all academic activities, including attending lectures. The SUG has also appealed to local shuttle, bus, and tricycle operators to temporarily halt campus operations in solidarity with the student body.

The union stressed that the sit-at-home directive is strictly a peaceful expression of dissatisfaction, explicitly warning students against destruction of property, confrontation with staff, or any form of lawlessness. Student leaders maintained that the protest is intended to urge management to reconsider the hike, emphasizing that open dialogue with campus authorities will continue.
