MTV officially closes down 24/7 music channels after 44 years

After 44 iconic years of broadcasting music non-stop, MTV has officially shut down its 24/7 music channels globally, marking the end of an era for many who grew up watching the network.
MTV, which launched in 1981 with the groundbreaking airing of “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles, revolutionized the music and entertainment industry. It helped launch the careers of countless superstars—from Madonna and Michael Jackson to Beyoncé and Eminem, while shaping pop culture through shows like TRL, MTV Cribs, and Yo! MTV Raps.
The closure of its round-the-clock music programming reflects a shift in audience behavior, as streaming platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and TikTok have become the go to sources for music discovery and content. Still, for many millennials and Gen Xers, MTV was more than a channel it was a cultural hub.
Netizens mourned the end with throwback clips, memes, and emotional posts. “MTV was with me through out my childhood.I actually got to know lots of Celebrities and lots of music through them.
Their impact stays till today for real”… one user wrote. “Heartbreaking, these got me through some boring days ” another user added. While others criticized MTV for shifting focus to reality TV long ago, many still acknowledged the legacy it leaves behind.
