NANS: Ex-FUOYE SUG President Adio Released from Prison

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Babatunde Akinteye, has announced the release of the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Comrade Adio, who was previously remanded in prison.

Akinteye disclosed the development in a statement posted on his official X handle on Friday, saying he had personally spoken with the former student leader after his release.

According to the NANS president, “I am pleased to announce that Comrade Adio, the immediate past FUOYE SUG President, who was remanded in prison, has regained his freedom.”

He added that “I just spoke with him personally, and I am delighted to confirm that he is in high spirits.”

Akinteye commended the Chairman of the NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) in Ekiti State for what he described as his steadfast commitment and leadership throughout the period of Adio’s detention.

He said, “I sincerely commend the NANS JCC Chairman, Ekiti State, for his unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership throughout this period. He has once again demonstrated that he is a thoroughly bred comrade, always ready to stand for justice and the welfare of students.”

The NANS president also praised the association’s National Head of Administration for his role in securing the former student leader’s release.

According to him, “I also appreciate the NANS National Head of Administration for his proactiveness, dedication, and relentless efforts in ensuring this positive outcome.”

Describing the development as a victory for the student movement, Akinteye said the outcome underscored the importance of unity in the pursuit of justice.

“This victory is a reminder that when we stand together in solidarity, justice can prevail,” he added.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has planned peaceful protests in Ekiti State over the remand of the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Comrade Adio, describing the court’s action as a violation of due process and his fundamental rights.

The student body also directed its leadership in Ekiti State to begin mobilising for peaceful protests to demand the former student leader’s release.

NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, made the position known in a statement issued on Tuesday after receiving reports of the ruling by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.

According to Akinteye, the former SUG president had approached the court as the complainant in the matter and was not facing any criminal charge before the proceedings allegedly took a different turn.
