NBA President Calls for Stronger Nigeria-Liberia Legal Ties at Supreme Court Ceremony

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, has advocated for a deeper legal partnership between Nigeria and Liberia, emphasizing the crucial role of the legal profession in fortifying justice systems across West Africa.

Mr. Osigwe made the call on Wednesday during the formal opening of the March 2026 Term of the Supreme Court of Liberia. In a statement shared via his X handle, he conveyed the solidarity of the Nigerian legal community to his Liberian counterparts, describing the court’s new term as a significant institutional tradition that underscores the judiciary’s dedication to justice and democratic governance.

He noted that the ceremony represents more than just a tradition, serving as a renewal of the legal profession’s duty to protect constitutional values and ensure accessible justice.

The NBA President commended Liberia’s judiciary for its resilience and commitment to upholding the rule of law. He highlighted the shared historical ties between Nigeria and Liberia, stating that both nations have a common vision for a stable and prosperous West Africa. He stressed that their legal communities are vital to achieving this through collaboration and shared advocacy.

Mr. Osigwe proposed concrete steps for this partnership, including structured professional development programmes, joint conferences, young lawyers’ exchange initiatives, and the use of virtual learning platforms. He argued that such efforts would raise advocacy standards, strengthen legal research, and promote specialization in areas relevant to modern governance.

On regional cooperation, he pointed out that harmonizing legal frameworks is essential for strengthening cross-border dispute resolution mechanisms, which in turn can attract investment and boost investor confidence.

Addressing the impact of technology, the NBA President called for West African Bars and judiciaries to collaborate on adopting innovations like electronic filing, virtual hearings, and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence, all while ensuring due process remains paramount.

He concluded by expressing hope that the new term would foster principled advocacy and greater public trust, reaffirming the NBA’s commitment to solidarity and partnership with Liberia in building a stronger regional legal community.
