NBA Sets October 30 Deadline to Probe ₦100m Imo Gift Allegation

The Nigerian Bar Association has launched an investigation into allegations of impropriety surrounding the receipt and disbursement of a ₦100m gift from the Imo State Government to its Owerri branch, following demands by 183 members for an extraordinary meeting.

NBA President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya, SAN, constituted a three-member committee to investigate the matter and submit its findings and recommendations by October 30, 2026.

The decision was contained in a letter dated October 14, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the NBA Owerri Branch, Dr Mazi Udegbulem, and published on the association’s X page on Friday.

The committee comprises the NBA General Secretary, Afam Okeke; Third Vice-President, Iniobong Irene Pepple; and Treasurer, Esther Jimoh.

The investigation follows concerns raised by branch members over the management of the ₦100m gift and a requisition by 183 members seeking an Extraordinary General Meeting to address the matter.

As part of its assignment, the committee will examine financial records, receive representations from affected parties and investigate the allegations surrounding the funds.

The NBA president directed that the extraordinary meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 15, at 2pm should proceed, with the committee attending as her representatives to observe proceedings and ensure an orderly meeting.

She also instructed the branch leadership to make relevant financial documents available, including receipts, bank statements, expenditure schedules, approvals and payment vouchers.

Copies of the documents are to be supplied to the committee within 24 hours of receiving the letter, while all records relating to the gift must be preserved.

In the letter, Badejo-Okunsanya stressed that the investigation was intended to provide answers to members’ concerns without prejudging anyone involved.

“The constitution of this Committee does not amount to a finding against any person. Everyone whose conduct is called into question will be given a fair opportunity to respond,” she stated.

She urged the branch leadership and members who requested the meeting to cooperate with the process, emphasising the need for transparency and a fair hearing.

The committee is expected to submit its report to the NBA president no later than October 30.

The investigation places the management of the ₦100m gift under formal scrutiny, although the association has not established any wrongdoing against an individual. The outcome of the committee’s inquiry is expected to clarify how the funds were received, managed and disbursed.
