NDLEA Arrests Suspect with 1,499 Bottles of Codeine Syrup in Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano State Strategic Command, has arrested a 45-year-old suspected drug smuggler, Ashiru Bala, with 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup.
In a statement released on Thursday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, said the suspect was apprehended at his residence in Lambu village, Tofa Local Government Area, Kano State, on February 25, 2026.
According to the statement, operatives acted on intelligence-led operations that led to the seizure. Bala was intercepted after transporting the consignment from Abuja and was reportedly preparing to deliver the illicit substances to a local drug dealer in Kano for consumption.
The drugs were said to be part of supplies stockpiled ahead of the Sallah celebrations.
Maigatari revealed that the suspect confessed to transporting illicit substances for about two years. Bala stated that he had worked in township services in Abuja for four years and admitted to receiving substantial payments for each movement of the consignments, indicating awareness of the illegal nature of his activities.
The command’s Commander, DY Lawal, described the arrest as a demonstration of the agency’s commitment to protecting communities from the harms of illicit substances. He emphasised that intelligence-driven enforcement remains central to the command’s strategy, particularly during periods of increased demand such as festive seasons.
Lawal added that the command will sustain pressure on drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
The operation forms part of the ongoing “Operation Ramadan Mubarak,” initiated by the command in alignment with the national agenda for a drug-free society championed by NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Bub
a Marwa (rtd).
