NDPHC Marks 20 Years Amid Power Sector Reforms

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has declared that the country’s power sector reforms have moved beyond policy statements to tangible outcomes, as the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) celebrated its 20th anniversary amidst significant changes in the electricity market.

Speaking at the event in Abuja, Shettima stated that the Electricity Act 2023 has transformed the power sector landscape, repositioning NDPHC for a commercially-driven future. “The law provides clearer authority, stronger institutional footing, and enhanced credibility for the company to compete in an open energy market,” he said.

Shettima noted that NDPHC is transitioning from an intervention-focused entity to a market-driven enterprise, prioritizing value extraction from assets, contract strengthening, and governance-led commercialization. He credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration with restoring investor confidence in the sector through reform-driven policies.

NDPHC Managing Director Jennifer Adighije highlighted the company’s contributions to Nigeria’s power infrastructure, including adding 9,000 megavolt-amperes of transformer capacity, constructing transmission substations, and rolling out transmission lines nationwide. Adighije stated that NDPHC is adopting a customer-centric strategy, leveraging the Electricity Act to collaborate with partners and drive power development.

Shettima assured Nigerians that the NDPHC board would uphold governance standards, protect shareholder value, and align operations with national energy goals, positioning the company for long-term success.
