Neurosurgeon Wale Sulaiman Declares Bid for Kwara Governorship in 2027

World-renowned neurosurgeon and philanthropist Dr. Wale Sulaiman has formally announced his intention to contest the governorship election in Kwara State in 2027.

Sulaiman made the declaration on Friday at a stakeholders’ meeting in his home ward of Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area, ending months of speculation about his political ambition. He stated that his decision followed extensive consultations across communities and interest groups in the state.

“It is not yet time for campaigns. We will do the needful once INEC gives the go-ahead. Today, I am here to formally express my interest in contesting for the office of Governor in 2027,” Sulaiman told party leaders and executives at the gathering.

The medical practitioner highlighted his experience, exposure, and track record as qualities that position him to lead the state. He commended the incumbent Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his performance since 2019 and emphasized the need for continuity and capable leadership to sustain developmental strides.

Sulaiman stressed that Kwara requires a leader with strong local and international networks to build upon current progress.

Several political figures voiced support for his ambition during the meeting. Former Commissioner for Water Resources, Bolaji Khaleel, stated that no other aspirant possessed the qualities needed to continue Governor AbdulRazaq’s legacy like Sulaiman.

Former State House of Assembly member Abdulkarim Oladipo Kadiri recalled that during the 2023 election cycle, community members viewed Sulaiman as having gubernatorial, rather than senatorial, stature.

Another speaker, former Special Adviser Sunday Awoyemi, noted that Sulaiman’s entry has reshaped political calculations in Kwara, calling him “the best hand for the job.”

Sulaiman, a national honoree known for medical outreach and infrastructure projects across Kwara communities, has built considerable grassroots support in recent years.

His declaration adds to early political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, as aspirants begin positioning themselves to succeed Governor AbdulRazaq, who is serving his final term.
