Nigeria Ranked Fifth in English Proficiency Across Africa, New Global Report Reveals

Nigeria has been ranked as the fifth most proficient English-speaking country in Africa, according to the newly released 2025 Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index (EPI). The findings, cited by PUNCH Online from EF’s official website on Monday, place the nation just behind South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Zambia in continental standings.

The global study, conducted by the international education organization EF, evaluated the English skills of 2.2 million test-takers across 123 countries and regions. This year’s index marked a significant expansion in methodology, incorporating assessments of speaking and writing skills for the first time through artificial intelligence technology developed by EF’s education tech division.

In Nigeria, where English serves as the official language, the report highlights its entrenched role in education, government, media, and business as a key factor in sustaining high proficiency levels. The language acts as a vital tool for national communication and commercial activity.

The rankings emphasize the increasing role of English as a critical bridge for international dialogue, education, and commerce worldwide.
