Nigeria spent N89.9bn on umbrellas, footwear, other imports in 2025 – NBS

Nigeria spent a total of N89.9 billion on the importation of items including umbrellas, footwear, headgear, and whips in 2025, according to foreign trade statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The data shows that N22.1 billion of that amount was spent in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, covering October to December.

Beyond consumer goods, the country also recorded significant expenditure on fuel imports during the year. A review of the NBS figures indicates that Nigeria imported petrol worth N3.5 trillion in the last quarter of 2025.

Combined with previous quarters N1.76 trillion in Q1, N2.37 trillion in Q2, and N1.2 trillion in Q3 the total fuel import bill for 2025 stood at N8.8 trillion, the highest annual outlay on petrol in recent years.

The N3.5 trillion spent on petrol in Q4 2025 exceeded quarterly records from previous years, including N3.303 trillion in Q4 2024, N1.558 trillion in Q4 2022, N1.443 trillion in Q4 2021, and N574.8 billion in Q4 2019.

Additionally, the country spent N499.7 billion on crude oil imports during the year, despite being a major crude producer. Analysts say the figures highlight ongoing challenges in local refining capacity and domestic fuel production.

The high import bills come amid rising fuel prices across Nigeria. Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) now sells for approximately N1,100 per litre, while diesel prices have hit N1,400 per litre at some outlets. Filling stations have been adjusting pump prices in response to global market tensions following recent attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel.
