Nigerian Students Secure ₦235 Million in Funding at Inaugural Engineering Olympiad

Four Nigerian universities have been awarded a combined ₦235 million in funding following their success at the maiden Nigerian Engineering Olympiad (NEO). The competition, designed to foster innovation and bridge the gap between academic talent and national industrial needs, culminated in a grand finale in Lagos where student teams showcased solutions for critical infrastructure, security, and healthcare challenges.

The student teams competed for ₦110 million in seed grants to help commercialize their projects, while their respective university engineering faculties received additional funding to improve research and education.

Competition Winners and Innovations:

1st Place (Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola): Received ₦50 million for “Ubuntu Sapphire,” a decentralized security intelligence network designed for rural areas with limited connectivity. Their engineering faculty was also awarded a new Centre of Excellence building.

2nd Place (University of Ibadan): Awarded ₦30 million for “Aurora Birth,” a HealthTech device aimed at reducing neonatal mortality in low-resource environments. The university’s engineering faculty received a ₦75 million research grant.

3rd Place (University of Jos): Received ₦20 million for “Sentra,” an AI-enabled, solar-powered diagnostic tool for farmers to detect crop diseases and soil issues.

4th Place (University of Nigeria, Nsukka): Awarded ₦10 million for “Flameless,” a modular system that converts associated gas into electricity. The university’s engineering faculty received a ₦50 million grant.

The contest drew 375 team applications from 80 tertiary institutions. Following regional competitions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, 12 finalists were selected to attend an intensive national innovation bootcamp in Lagos, where they received mentorship from industry leaders and investors.

Organizers and partners, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, emphasized that the initiative is a vital step toward leveraging youth-driven innovation to solve real-world problems. They urged the winning teams to push beyond the competition phase and ensure their products reach the market.

Looking ahead, stakeholders expressed a commitment to expanding the program, with promises to increase prototype development grants for future participants to further incentivize STEM education and reduce the impact of brain drain in the sector.
