NIN Database Not Hacked, NIMC Breaks Silence

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed a viral video claiming that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database has been compromised

The commission described the claim as false, explaining that the video currently circulating online is an old report from 2024 that had previously been debunked.

NIMC made the clarification in a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, and published on the commission’s official X account on Thursday.

According to the commission, there has been no breach of the National Identity Database (NIDB), contrary to the claims contained in the circulating video.

NIMC urged Nigerians to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.

“The Commission National Identity Database (NIDB) has not been breached or compromised at any point,” the statement said.

The commission explained that the database is protected by a multi-layered security infrastructure designed to safeguard the personal information of Nigerians and legally resident foreigners registered with the system.

It added that its security framework is maintained in accordance with international best practices.

NIMC also advised members of the public to rely on its official communication channels for information concerning the National Identity Management System.

NIMC highlights new NIN verification system
The commission further drew attention to its recently introduced NIN Authentication (NINAuth) platform, describing it as a combination of web, API and mobile verification services developed to strengthen data protection and privacy.

According to NIMC, the system allows NIN holders to give explicit consent before their personal information is released for Know Your Customer (KYC) processes or other identity verification purposes.

The commission said NINAuth can facilitate identity verification for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax-related transactions and financial services, without requiring unnecessary exposure of a person’s raw NIN or other sensitive information.

NIMC said the platform forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen data protection in line with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, while working with relevant security agencies to improve system security and combat misinformation.
