Nonprofit Expands Treatment for Clubfoot in Nigerian Children

Clubfoot

A nonprofit organization, The Straight Child Foundation, reported significant progress in December 2025 in treating children born with clubfoot, a congenital condition affecting foot alignment.

The foundation’s state coordinator, Uchenna Egbe-eni, stated that 90 children were enrolled and began treatment across 23 supported clinics in 11 states. Over 72% of the children were under 12 months old, which is crucial for effective correction.

The treatment follows an international standard protocol involving a series of casts and a minor surgical procedure called a tenotomy. The foundation reported that 93.2% of enrolled children underwent this procedure, and treatment retention rates remained high, with dropout rates below 7% at key stages.

To ensure quality, the organization conducted supportive visits to partner clinics and engaged in capacity-building initiatives. Egbe-eni thanked the international partner MiracleFeet Inc. for ongoing support.

Public health experts emphasize that early, coordinated treatment can prevent long-term disability and reduce healthcare costs. The foundation plans to strengthen follow-up systems and caregiver education to expand its reach.
