North-South Youths Sign Peace Deal in Kaduna
Youths from across Nigeria’s northern and southern regions have put aside their differences and signed a peace accord aimed at promoting national unity and collective progress. The historic agreement was reached on Saturday in Kaduna, with representatives from the South-East, South-South, South-West, and North coming together to forge a common front.
The meeting, organised by the National Youth Alliance, was held at the prestigious Arewa House in Kaduna, and marked a significant milestone in the country’s quest for cohesion and stability. The youth leaders pledged to eschew ethnic and religious divisions, opting instead to speak with one voice in the interest of national unity and democratic stability, particularly ahead of the 2027 elections.
In his welcome address, Abubakar Mohammed-General, Vice-Chairman of NYA (North), lamented the decades-long manipulation of young people by political elites for selfish ends. He noted that Nigerian youths have been divided along ethnic and religious lines, making them instruments of conflict rather than development partners.
Meshack Onyeche, Vice-Chairman of NYA (South), echoed these sentiments, declaring that Nigeria’s unity is non-negotiable. He insisted that young people across the country have resolved to reject divisive narratives and work towards a brighter future for all.
The Convener of the National Youth Alliance, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, recounted the group’s evolution and expressed concern over the persistent deception of youths by leaders who prioritise personal and family gains over national development.
The peace accord, christened “The Birthing of a New Nigeria,” reflects a broader effort by youth leaders to prevent a repeat of past tensions and foster cooperation, mutual understanding, and a unified voice among Nigeria’s young population. As the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, this agreement serves as a beacon of hope for a more united and prosperous Nigeria.
