NSCDC Reaffirms Commitment To Accountability As Panel Probes Death Of 33 Suspects

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Audi, has reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to transparency, accountability and due process as investigation into the reported deaths of 33 suspected illegal miners in custody of Niger State Command begins.

Audi spoke when Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, inaugurated a 10-member independent panel chaired by Mr. Jonathan Kure, a retired Deputy Director-General of the Department of State Services.

The panel, comprising professionals of proven integrity, is mandated to independently examine circumstances surrounding the deaths and make recommendations.

Tunji-Ojo charged members to discharge their duties with professionalism, impartiality and integrity to establish facts and provide credible answers to families and the public.

Kure, on behalf of members, condoled with families and assured of diligence and objectivity.

NSCDC Spokesman, Babawale Afolabi, said the Corps welcomes the probe and will provide full access to records and personnel.

He added that the Corps commiserates with bereaved families, stressing that respect for human dignity and adherence to law remain integral to its mandate.
