Nurse Remanded for 60 Days Over Corps Member’s Death in Abeokuta
A 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, has been remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre in Abeokuta over the alleged unlawful abortion that led to the death of a 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps member, Victoria Ariyo.
Adesanya was arraigned on Thursday before a Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on four counts, including conspiracy, supplying drugs for an unlawful abortion, and murder.
The Police Counsel, Solomon Babalola, informed the court that the alleged offences occurred between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta. He stated that the drugs supplied by Adesanya reportedly led to Ariyo’s death.
The charges against the defendant include conspiracy to commit felony, unlawful attempt to procure abortion by supplying drugs, conspiracy to commit murder, and unlawfully causing death through the administration of abortion-inducing drugs.
The police counsel requested that Adesanya be remanded for 60 days pending advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions. The presiding magistrate, O. Sam-Obaleye, granted the request and ordered the defendant to be held at the Ibara Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned to May 26, 2026.
In a related development, police reports indicated that the deceased corps member was allegedly in a romantic relationship with Abass Olalekan, the NYSC Inspector for Abeokuta South Local Government, which resulted in pregnancy.
Olalekan was arrested and arraigned on Monday on two counts of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000.
