Orphanage Shut In Edo For Irregular Adoption, Operator Arrested

The Edo State Government has shut down an orphanage home over alleged irregular adoption practices and facilitated the reunion of a 53-year-old Nigerian deported from the United States with his family.

The orphanage home was shut down in Afuze, Owan East Local Government Area over alleged irregular adoption practices.

The government said the move followed investigations into suspected irregularities.

Mrs Eugenia Abdallah, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development disclosed this is on Thursday, August 13, 2026 at a press briefing in Benin City.

Abdullah said the operator was handed over to the appropriate law-enforcement authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

She said the intervention reflected the Ministry’s resolve to ensure that children’s homes operate within approved standards and that children are protected from exploitation and illegal adoption practices.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner also disclosed that a 53-year-old Nigerian deportee from the United State of America, USA, identified as Peter Guobadia has been reunited with his family by the Edo State Government.

She said the deportee who was found wandering in Benin City in a distressed mental condition, was rescued by the state government, which also provided medical and psychiatric treatment for him.
