Oshiomhole Attributes Peter Obi’s 2023 Electoral Support to Public Frustration Over Past Policies

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has downplayed the suggestion that Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi remains a major political threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on TVC News, the lawmaker representing Edo North argued that Obi’s strong performance in the 2023 presidential election was largely driven by widespread voter anger over economic hardship rather than personal political momentum.

According to Oshiomhole, public frustration stemming from the naira redesign policy and severe fuel scarcity on the eve of the 2023 polls significantly influenced voter behavior. He noted that the cash crunch forced citizens to endure long queues at ATMs and pay steep fees to Point of Sale operators just to access their funds, creating widespread dissatisfaction that benefited opposition candidates.

The former Edo State Governor maintained that those pre-election monetary policies did not represent core APC principles, describing Obi’s 2023 vote tally as the outcome of an unusual economic environment rather than a permanent political shift.
