Over 11,000 Nigerians Applied for Asylum in Ireland Within 13 Years

More than 11,000 Nigerians sought asylum in Ireland between 2013 and 2025, according to official migration data, highlighting a steady rise in the number of citizens seeking international protection abroad.

Records show that applications from Nigerians increased significantly over the years, reaching their highest level in 2024 before declining in 2025. Nigerians consistently ranked among the top nationalities applying for asylum in Ireland during the period under review.

The figures indicate that asylum requests from Nigerians accounted for a notable share of the total applications received by Irish authorities. In several years, Nigerians represented the largest group of asylum seekers in the country.

Ireland also recorded a sharp increase in overall asylum applications over the past decade, with annual numbers rising from a few thousand cases to well over 18,000 at their peak. Although application volumes dropped slightly in 2025, demand for international protection remained high.

Data on application outcomes revealed that many Nigerian claims faced rejection, particularly under accelerated processing procedures used by Irish immigration authorities. However, some applicants were granted humanitarian permission to remain in the country.

The report further showed that thousands of Nigerian asylum cases remain pending, with the number of applicants awaiting decisions increasing considerably in recent years.

The trend reflects ongoing migration pressures and the growing number of Nigerians exploring opportunities and protection abroad amid economic and social challenges at home.
