PDP Blasts Tinubu’s 2026 Budget as ‘Consolidated Sufferings’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s ₦58.18 trillion 2026 budget, labeling it a “Budget of Consolidated Renewed Sufferings” that perpetuates economic hardship on Nigerians while benefiting the governing class. In a statement on Friday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong criticized the budget for failing to address widespread poverty, rising living costs, and insecurity.
Tinubu had presented the “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity” to the National Assembly, projecting economic improvement and stricter budgetary discipline. However, the PDP argued that Nigerians have endured significant hardships under the administration, with poverty and hunger worsening.
“The President cited a 3.98% GDP growth rate as evidence of economic stabilisation. But economic growth alone doesn’t guarantee improved living standards,” Ememobong said, noting over 30.9% of Nigerians live below the international extreme poverty line.
The PDP questioned the sectors driving growth and who benefits, comparing the 3.98% growth under Tinubu to 6.87% in 2013 under a PDP administration, driven by agriculture and trade. The party demanded transparent security funding execution, better equipment, and welfare for personnel facing armed groups.
The PDP expressed concern over concurrent operation of multiple budgets, citing execution of the 2024 capital budget extending to December 2025 while the 2025 budget operates, undermining fiscal discipline and transparency. The party urged greater accountability in managing Nigeria’s finances.
