Plateau Govt Imposes 48-Hour Curfew After Deadly Attack in Jos North

The Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area following a deadly attack in the Angwan Rukuba community.

In a statement on Sunday, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, said the curfew would take effect from midnight of March 29 to April 1, 2026. The decision, according to the government, came after a “tragic security incident” in the area that resulted in loss of lives and left several others injured.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unprovoked,” and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible.

Residents said gunmen stormed the community on motorcycles on Sunday evening, shooting at passersby. A resident, John Caleb, said six people had been confirmed dead, with several casualties taken to a nearby hospital. Another resident, Janet Pam, recounted hearing gunshots and later discovering that attackers on bikes were shooting at people moving along the road and those selling by the roadside.

Pam said her neighbour was among those killed while returning from evening church service. She added that the attackers fled before security operatives arrived, causing panic in the community.

It was gathered that some youths, angered by the attack, blocked roads in the area but were later dispersed by security forces.

The latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks in Plateau State in recent months. Weeks earlier, at least 20 security operatives and vigilantes were reportedly killed in an ambush in Kanam Local Government Area.

In 2025, coordinated attacks across several Plateau communities left over 100 people dead and thousands displaced. Similarly, Christmas Eve attacks in 2023 claimed more than 140 lives in the state.
