Police Officer, Two Civilians Killed as Lakurawa Militants Raid Sokoto Village

A police officer and two civilians were killed following a violent raid by suspected Lakurawa militants on Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The attack, which occurred on Monday, also resulted in the destruction of security infrastructure, with the assailants setting ablaze two patrol vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Sokoto State Police Command Spokesperson Ahmed Rufai stated that security personnel were deployed to the area immediately after receiving a distress call. Operatives engaged the attackers in a gun battle and successfully repelled them from the village, though one officer, identified as Hussaini Manyu, paid the supreme price during the exchange.

Local sources identified the civilian victims as an elderly resident, Bala Wakili, and a young herder who was killed after resisting the group’s attempt to rustle his livestock. A local farmer also sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and is currently undergoing medical treatment, while an attempted sexual assault on a resident was reported during the invasion.

Community leaders and local residents voiced growing concerns over escalating security threats in the region, appealing to both the Sokoto State Government and federal security agencies to reinforce deployments across Kebbe and adjacent local government areas to prevent further incursions.
