Police Rescue Woman After Mob Attack Over Alleged Infiltration of Anambra Hospital

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into potential child trafficking following the arrest of a 37-year-old woman at a medical facility in the Awada area of Obosi.
The suspect, identified as Anurika Nweme, was taken into protective custody on Tuesday after she was caught allegedly filming newborn babies in the maternity ward of Divine Mercy Hospital. According to police reports, Nweme had gained access to the hospital while dressed in attire resembling a nurse’s uniform.
Hospital staff became suspicious when they observed her recording the infants. When questioned, she claimed to be an employee of the facility; however, management quickly verified that she was not a member of their staff. This discovery triggered a hostile reaction from bystanders at the scene.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed in a statement on Thursday that police operatives from the Awada Divisional Headquarters intervened to rescue the suspect from an angry mob.
“The suspect is currently in protective custody and assisting the investigating police officers in identifying others involved,” Ikenga stated, noting that the command is now conducting a full-scale investigation into the matter.
This incident is part of a broader, regional effort by law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to curb illegal adoption and child trafficking networks. Authorities have recently intensified crackdowns on suspicious medical facilities across several states, leading to arrests and the closure of multiple unauthorized hospitals.
The police have indicated that further details regarding the investigation will be provided as the process continues.
