Prayers and Decisive Action Key to Defeating Insecurity, Says Borno Catholic Bishop

The Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese, Most Rev. Oliver Dashe, has urged citizens to sustain intense prayers to end regional insecurity, asserting that spiritual dedication alongside proactive government measures will ultimately overcome insurgency.

Speaking to journalists in Maiduguri following a church service to mark the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cleric acknowledged the relative stability currently experienced in Borno State after years of conflict, attributing the improvement to divine intervention and community resilience.

“Prayers have the power to overcome insurgency, but spiritual efforts must be complemented by practical human action,” Bishop Dashe stated. “While we remain steadfast in prayer, it is equally crucial for individuals to stay vigilant and for authorities to take decisive steps.”

Reflecting on his 17-year tenure leading the diocese, the bishop noted that religious devotions have played a central role in maintaining hope among residents. He highlighted that many displaced persons have since returned to their homes as security conditions gradually improved across the state.

However, the religious leader urged both federal and state authorities to strengthen support for security forces, enabling them to clear remaining insurgent hideouts in remote forests and mountain regions to secure lasting peace across the country.
