President Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for Bill to Overhaul Senior Secondary Education

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested that the Senate review and pass the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The proposed legislation aims to modernize the administration and governance of public senior secondary schools across the country.

The request was presented to the Senate during Thursday’s plenary session through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. According to the President, the bill received approval from the Federal Executive Council in late April and is now being submitted to the National Assembly to enhance the commission’s operational effectiveness.

President Tinubu emphasized that the amendment is a key part of his administration’s broader strategy to strengthen educational institutions, improve learning outcomes, and foster long-term national development. He urged the lawmakers to grant the bill “expeditious passage” to ensure the reforms can be implemented without delay.

Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business. The committee has been tasked with processing the legislation and reporting back to the upper chamber within one week.

The National Senior Secondary Education Commission is responsible for coordinating public senior secondary education, maintaining quality standards, and providing necessary funding interventions to states. If enacted, this amendment is expected to significantly bolster the commission’s legal framework and its capacity to oversee the nation’s secondary school system.
