Rainfall Turns Deadly as Abuja Teen Drowns Retrieving Footwear from Canal

A tragic incident occurred in the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday when a 14-year-old boy lost his life after drowning in a canal behind Millennium Park in Abuja.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday. According to the police spokesperson, the unfortunate event happened during a rainfall when the teenage boy attempted to retrieve his shoe that had fallen into the canal.
Emergency responders were able to recover the boy’s body from the water and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.
The father of the deceased has declined an autopsy for his son and requested that the body be released for burial. Authorities have granted this request while the Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
This incident comes just days after a similar tragedy in Kano State, where an 18-year-old boy, Abdullahi Aminu, drowned after falling into a pond at Kofar Gabas in Danbatta Local Government Area on Tuesday.
