Residents Abandon Niger Communities Amid Rising Insecurity, Relocate to Safer Areas

A traditional leader from Borgu Emirate in Niger State, Murtala Dantoro, has expressed concern over the growing number of residents leaving their communities due to persistent insecurity and kidnapping incidents.

Speaking in Minna, the state capital, Dantoro said many families have relocated to safer locations, including neighbouring Benin Republic and parts of Niger State, following repeated attacks by armed groups. He urged both federal and state authorities to strengthen security measures and prevent further displacement of residents.

According to him, fear and uncertainty have forced many people to abandon their homes, farms and businesses in search of safety. He warned that the continued movement of residents could have long-term economic and social consequences, as skilled individuals and productive citizens are leaving their communities.

Dantoro called for a more proactive security strategy, including the establishment of permanent security formations and increased deployment of personnel across vulnerable areas in Borgu Emirate. He noted that local communities were willing to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.

The emirate prince also appealed to humanitarian organisations to provide assistance for displaced persons, including shelter and relief materials, while longer-term solutions are being pursued.

On the reported mass abductions in parts of the local government area, Dantoro said figures circulating among residents suggest that hundreds of people may have been affected in recent attacks. However, he acknowledged that security agencies were yet to confirm an exact number.

He further stressed the importance of collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups, describing community-based security networks as critical partners in efforts to tackle criminal activities in the area.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command said rescue operations for abducted victims are ongoing. A police representative explained that authorities were focusing on ensuring the safe recovery of those affected and cautioned against speculation over the number of victims involved.

The police also confirmed that several communities were impacted by the attacks, leading to displacement and destruction of property, while efforts continue to restore normalcy and improve security in the affected areas.
