Rivers Assembly Fails to Resume Plenary After Adjournment

Rivers State House of Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly did not reconvene for plenary on Thursday, January 15, 2026, as previously scheduled.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had adjourned its last sitting on January 8 until this date. During that prior session, lawmakers had initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

As of noon on Thursday, however, there was no indication of legislative activity at the assembly’s current sitting venue—the conference hall of its official legislative quarters on Aba Road. No official reason was provided for the failure to resume, and a new date for plenary has not been announced.

Efforts to obtain clarification from the House Chairman on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages.

The impeachment charges cited by the Assembly last week included the demolition of the state assembly complex and unauthorized spending, among other allegations.
