SEMA Inaugurates Climate Working Group In Yobe

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, has officially launched the Climate Sector Working Group in what is described as the first initiative of its kind in the state.

The launch, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and supported by the Yobe Sahara Restoration Drive Project, SDRP, brought together international organisations, civil society groups, government institutions, legislators and development partners.

In a statement, SEMA said the Working Group will serve as a coordination platform for climate-related initiatives, implementation strategies, resource mobilisation and partnerships in the state.

Delivering a paper on the “Yobe State Multisectoral Humanitarian Coordination Structure”, Dr. M. I. Jalo of Yobe SEMA said the group was established to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable development.

The event was attended by the Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon. Ahmed Musa Dumbol; the Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources; the Hon. Commissioners for Environment and Water Resources; representatives of FAO, UNOCHA, the Nigerian Environmental Society and the Project Coordinator of SDRP.

A panel discussion was held, followed by the articulation of commitments, action points and the formal launch by the Guest of Honour.

SEMA said the initiative aligns with Governor Mai Mala Buni’s vision on climate resilience, environmental sustainability and land restoration across Yobe State.
