Soldier Killed in Suspected Bandit Ambush in Zamfara

A Nigerian soldier, Abdulwahab Lawal, has been reportedly killed in an ambush by suspected bandits while travelling to his duty post in Zamfara State.
According to family sources, Lawal was on his way from Malumfashi in Katsina State to resume duty when gunmen attacked commuters along the route on Tuesday evening.
The victim was shot during the assault and died at the scene, a family member confirmed.
The assailants are believed to be armed bandits operating across parts of the North-West, a region plagued by years of violence involving criminal gangs engaged in kidnappings, cattle rustling, and deadly raids on highways and communities.
As of the time of this report, security authorities had not issued any official statement regarding the incident or provided details on the exact location of the attack.
Family members confirmed Lawal’s death and stated that funeral prayers would be conducted in accordance with Islamic rites.
The incident adds to the growing toll of violence in Nigeria’s North-West, where both civilians and security personnel continue to face persistent attacks despite ongoing military operations aimed at curbing banditry.
Efforts to reach the Army spokesperson, Colonel Onyinye Anele, for confirmation and further details were unsuccessful, as she had not responded to inquiries as of the time of filing this report.
