Soldiers Allegedly Assault BRT Driver in Lagos Over Lane Violation

Some personnel of the Nigerian Army have been accused of assaulting a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver along the Ikorodu Road corridor in Lagos.

The incident happened on Tuesday around the Palmgrove area, where the driver was reportedly attacked while operating on the dedicated BRT lane.

An eyewitness, who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity, said the driver was maintaining his lane when he was intercepted by the soldiers. The witness described the assault as unprovoked and uncalled for.

“The driver was on his BRT lane when he was assaulted by men of the military,” the source said.

The attack has drawn outrage from commuters and residents, with many calling on the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to take decisive action to protect its workers from harassment by security agencies.

“LAMATA must protect its workers,” the eyewitness added, stressing that such incidents threaten the safety and integrity of the public transport system.

The incident adds to a growing list of confrontations between military personnel and civilian transport workers in Lagos, often over the violation of BRT corridors.

As of the time of this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor LAMATA had issued an official response to the incident.
