Sowore Calls for Drones to Replace Jets, Scrap Defence Ministry
Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has proposed replacing Nigeria’s fighter jets with drones and abolishing the office of the Defence Minister to modernize the country’s fight against insecurit
Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, Sowore argued that drones are more cost-effective and efficient than traditional military assets for tackling banditry and kidnapping
“If I’m president, I’m not buying any more jets—I’m buying drones,” he stated. He emphasized that small, inexpensive drones could monitor vast forest areas and track criminals in real time, supporting police operation
Citing global military trends, Sowore claimed “the Air Force is on its way to retirement,” and added, “My minister of defence would be a drone
His comments come as Nigeria continues to face severe security challenges nationwide, despite government efforts to incorporate aerial surveillance into operation
