Super Eagles Mourn Passing of 1980 AFCON Winner Henry Nwosu

The Super Eagles have expressed sorrow over the death of former Nigeria international Henry Nwosu, who was a member of the country’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad. He was 62 years old.

In a statement posted on its official X platform on Saturday, the national team extended condolences to the family of the late midfielder, acknowledging his contribution to Nigerian football.

“We commiserate with the family of Henry Nwosu on his passing. A member of Nigeria’s historic squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations. Rest in peace!” the statement read.

Nwosu was the youngest member of the Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title on home soil in 1980, a achievement that secured his place in the country’s football history.

The Imo State-born midfielder was widely recognised for his vision, creativity and technical ability on the pitch. Following his retirement from active football, he remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor, helping to nurture younger players.

His death was announced on Saturday by former teammate and fellow 1980 AFCON winner, Segun Odegbami, who disclosed that the ex-midfielder passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after battling for his life for five days.
