Super Falcons Miss 2027 Women’s World Cup Following Play-Off Defeat to South Africa

RABAT — Nigeria’s Super Falcons will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the CAF play-off match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The loss officially ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 tournament in Brazil, marking the end of the 10-time African champions’ record streak of attending every edition of the global competition.

Following a goalless first half, South Africa took control in the second period. Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring in the 56th minute, and Refiloe Jane doubled the lead in the 77th minute to put Banyana Banyana in a commanding position.

A late VAR review brought drama to stoppage time, awarding Nigeria a penalty and resulting in a red card for Jane. Christy Ucheibe successfully converted the spot-kick to reduce the deficit, but the Falcons were unable to complete a comeback before the final whistle.

With the victory, South Africa advances to the intercontinental play-off tournament scheduled for late 2026 to compete for a final spot at the World Cup, while Justine Madugu’s side concludes a challenging tournament campaign.
