Suspected Terrorists Attack Military Base in Borno
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched an attack on a military camp in the Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State in the early hours of Monday.
According to security sources, the terrorists stormed the 25 Task Force Brigade in Damboa around 12:50 am. The assault occurred less than 30 minutes after a separate attack on Ajilari cross and surrounding areas in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The attack on Ajilari was successfully repelled by combined security forces, with residents confirming that gunfire ceased after several minutes of heavy shooting.
Confirming the Damboa incident in a statement, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said joint security operatives thwarted the attack around 1 am. While he did not specify the exact location within the local government area, he assured that normalcy had been restored and that more details would be provided later.
Residents reported hearing sporadic gunfire near the military base during the attack. A local source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the town through the 25 Task Force Brigade but were met with heavy resistance from troops.
“It was a horrible night. When we heard that terrorists were attempting to infiltrate Damboa through the military camp, the news quickly spread. Thank God for the effort of our gallant troops,” the source said.
The attack comes two weeks after terrorists stormed and burned a military base in Ngoshe, where civilians were killed and over 300 residents were abducted.
Following that incident, a group identified as Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack. In a video obtained by reporters, five men from the group vowed to extend their terror activities to Maiduguri and Abuja.
Speaking in Hausa on behalf of the group, one of them acknowledged that they had killed men and women during the Ngoshe attack. He stated that under the leadership of Imam Ubu Umaima, they had succeeded in their mission and would not stop there, threatening to attack Maiduguri and proceed to Abuja.
