Ten Die, Six Injured in Fatal Road Accident Along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A tragic collision on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of ten people, including one child, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The accident occurred on Sunday night at approximately 8:05 p.m. near the Saapade Bridge in Ogun State.

The crash involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a heavy-duty Sinotruk truck. According to official reports, the tragedy was triggered when the truck driver attempted to reverse on the highway after missing a turn. An approaching bus, reportedly traveling at high speed, attempted to navigate through the restricted space but collided violently with the truck.

A total of 18 passengers were involved in the incident. Ten individuals nine adult males and one male child were confirmed dead at the scene. The six survivors, consisting of four adult males and two adult females, were promptly evacuated by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel and transported to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention. Two other passengers escaped the wreckage without injury.

The FRSC attributed the disaster to a combination of dangerous driving, excessive speeding, and the violation of highway traffic regulations. Officials noted that reversing on high-speed expressways remains a lethal practice that frequently leads to preventable loss of life.

The wreckage has since been cleared from the highway, and local police from the Ishara Division have taken custody of the vehicles involved. The deceased have been deposited at a local mortuary.

In the wake of the tragedy, the FRSC sector command has extended its condolences to the grieving families and issued a stern warning to motorists. Authorities emphasized that drivers must strictly adhere to road safety protocols, maintain safe speeds, and use designated turning points rather than performing dangerous maneuvers on highways.
