Tinubu Administration Not Pursuing One-Party State, Says SGF Akume

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is neither seeking nor supporting a one-party state, emphasizing a firm commitment to political pluralism and democratic values.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Akume stressed that the federal government respects the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission and backs the multi-party framework, pointing to the registration of 21 political parties as evidence of genuine political competition. He affirmed that security agencies maintain professional impartiality during elections and that the administration remains dedicated to the rule of law and equal rights.

The SGF also noted that the government will continue its consultations with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, faith-based organizations, and other national stakeholders. He explained that recent high-level discussions between the President and the bishops addressed critical national issues, including security, economic challenges, religious freedom, and electoral credibility, while reinforcing the administration’s openness to constructive dialogue and collaboration for national development.
