Tinubu signs old National Anthem bill

President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Anthem Bill despite the opposition from Nigerians.

With the signing, the National Anthem, ‘Arise O Compatriot’ will no longer be sung hence the old National Anthem “Nigeria, we hail thee” will now be adopted.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio announced this on Wednesday during a joint session of the National Assembly.

He also announced that the president will not address the House but only flag off the new anthem.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said the president cancelled the address because June 12 is the official Democracy Day.

Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was the former national anthem of Nigeria, used from independence in 1960 until 1978. Nigeria’s present anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” was adopted in 1978, replacing “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.
