Uber Exits Nigeria After 12 Years of Operations

Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced its exit from Nigeria after 12 years of operations in the country.

The company said it would wind down its Nigerian operations effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following a review of its business.

In a statement announcing the decision, Uber described the move as a difficult one and apologised to customers who may be affected by the withdrawal of its services.

Uber said it had been privileged to serve Nigerians since launching in Lagos in 2014, connecting users with independent transportation providers for commuting, social visits and other journeys.

The company thanked its customers for trusting the platform over the years and acknowledged that its departure could disrupt their routines.

Uber further announced that its help centre would remain available until September 23 to assist customers with final account-related enquiries.

The ride-hailing company’s operations in Nigeria had faced a number of challenges over the years, including protests by drivers over fares, commission rates and alleged poor treatment.Geographic Reference

Similar protests were reported in 2017, 2023 and 2025 as drivers raised concerns about the terms of their engagement with the platform.

Uber’s departure makes Nigeria the latest market in which the company has discontinued operations. Since its global launch in 2009, the company has reportedly exited 14 countries across Asia and Africa.

The company did not provide further details in its announcement on the specific factors behind its decision to leave the Nigerian market.
