UK Announces 2026 Support Package: Wage Rises, Frozen Rail Fares, and Lower Bills for Families

The UK government has announced a comprehensive package of measures aimed at easing financial pressures on households in 2026, including wage increases, frozen rail fares, lower energy bills, and expanded childcare and welfare support.

In a statement released Monday, the government said the cost of living remains “the number one issue impacting working people” and outlined several key interventions set to take effect from April.

Key measures include:

Pay Rise for Low-Income Workers: Approximately 2.7 million workers will receive a pay increase, with the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage rising by 4%. Full-time workers on the National Living Wage will see an annual rise of about £900.

Rail Fare Freeze: Regulated rail fares across England and parts of Wales will be frozen in 2026 the first such freeze in 30 years. The government estimates a typical commuter using flexi-season tickets could save around £315 per year.

Energy Bill Reduction: Households will receive an average reduction of £150 on energy bills from April, applied alongside the existing Warm Home Discount Scheme.

Increased Pensions: The New State Pension will rise by 4.8%, bringing the weekly amount to £241.30.

Scrapping the Two-Child Limit: The controversial two-child limit on Universal Credit will be removed, a move expected to lift an estimated 450,000 children out of poverty.

Expanded Childcare: Eligible working parents in England will gain access to 30 hours per week of government-funded childcare for children aged nine months to school age, saving families up to £7,500 annually.

Nationwide Breakfast Clubs: Free breakfast clubs will be rolled out to every primary school in England, saving parents up to £450 per year per child.

The government stated the package is intended to “reduce everyday costs” and provide “practical steps to help ease the pressure” on families across the country.
