UK Arrests 3 Suspected of Spying for China, One is Labour MP’s Husband
Three men suspected of spying for China have been arrested in the United Kingdom, with one identified as the husband of Labour MP Joani Reid. The Metropolitan Police announced the arrests on Wednesday, stating the trio were detained on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service under the National Security Act 2023.
According to police, a 39-year-old man was arrested in London, a 68-year-old in Powys, Wales, and a 43-year-old in Pontyclun, Wales. Reid, who represents the Scottish constituency of East Kilbride and Strathaven, confirmed her husband, 39-year-old David Taylor, was among those arrested. In a statement, she denied any personal involvement, saying, “I have never seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any law.”
The arrests have heightened concerns about foreign interference in British democracy, with UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis saying the government is “deeply concerned” about Chinese state-linked activity targeting the UK. China has repeatedly denied allegations of espionage, calling them “fabrications and malicious slander.”
The incident has sparked political reactions, with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch calling for a tougher stance against Beijing. “China is targeting Britain, targeting all MPs enough,” she said, accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer of being soft on Beijing.
Police have sought to calm public fears, stating there’s no imminent threat to the public. Commander Helen Flanagan said security agencies are working to disrupt suspected malign activity, amid a significant increase in national security casework.
The arrests mark the latest in a string of cases involving individuals in the UK accused of espionage or political interference linked to China. In November, MI5 warned lawmakers about Chinese agents targeting MPs through professional networking platforms and front companies.
