UN Security Council Urges Global Action Against Hate Speech, Extremism

The United Nations Security Council overwhelmingly adopted a resolution condemning hate speech, racism, and acts of extremism.

According to the UN Security Council, hate speech, racism, xenophobia, intolerance, gender discrimination, and extremism can all contribute to violence.

To address the issue, Resolution 2686 was passed, which called on member nations to officially condemn such crimes.

Inter-religious and intercultural dialogue should be regarded as a critical tool by member nations in achieving peace, social stability, and internationally recognized development goals.

States were asked to support women’s safe involvement and leadership in society, as well as to build social cohesion, community resilience, gender equality, and economic empowerment for women.

It underlined states’ obligations to respect, promote, and safeguard all persons’ human rights and basic freedoms.

Misinformation, disinformation, and encouragement to violence against United Nations peacekeeping operations were all condemned by the council.

It also encouraged all of the secretary-general’s special representatives and special envoys to use their good offices to promote local peace efforts and, where appropriate, to involve local communities, women, youth, civil society, and religious leaders.

Furthermore, it asked the UN peacekeeping and special political missions to keep an eye out for hate speech, racism, and acts of extremism that could jeopardize peace and security.

The council requested the secretary-general to provide an oral briefing on the resolution’s implementation by June 14, 2024, and to swiftly inform it of threats to international peace and security.
